Wood-Filled Plastic Compounds
Plastic Extrusion Technologies offers our customers the greatest range of superior quality extruded plastic products and has extensive experience working with wood-filled renewable plastic compounds. WPCs are created by combining powdered wood fibers or wood flour filler and heated thermoplastic resin. The most prevalent technique of manufacture is extrusion with twin-screw extruders; however, injection molding is also employed.
WPCs may be produced from either virgin or recycled thermoplastics including high-density polyethylene (HDPE), low-density polyethylene (LDPE), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polypropylene (PP), acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS), polystyrene (PS), and polylactic acid (PLA).
These wood-filled plastic compounds include, but are not limited to:
- Wood-Filled Polyethylene – High-density polyethylene (HDPE), which accounts for up to 95 percent of the lumber. HDPE is the same substance that goes into milk jugs, refillable plastic water bottles, and some plastic bags.
- Wood-Filled Propylene – Polypropylene (PP) is a stiff, crystalline thermoplastic material that is commonly used in everyday items such as packaging trays, home products, storage cases, and medical devices.
- Wood-Filled Styrene – High Impact Polystyrene (HIPS), often known as styrene, is a flexible, impact-resistant, and cost-effective plastic that is easily machined and produced.
- Wood-Filled PVC -wood-filled PVC is gaining traction due to its resistance to moisture, high thermal stability, and stiffness.
