Rigid PVC plastic tubing is used to transfer liquids, air, or solids. It is crimp-resistant and varies in flexibility, chemical resistance, and wall thickness. The tubing is either transparent, translucent, or opaque. The tubing’s color may indicate which application it is used for.
Polycarbonate tubes are rigid tubes that offer toughness, abrasion resistance, corrosion resistance and impact resistance but they lack flexibility. Acrylic tubes are used in the food processing, fabrication, and engineering industries. Flexible tubes include nylon and PVC flexible tubing which is commonly used for fluid handling and filtration. Rigid plastic tubing can be drilled, cut, and bonded to other tubes.
The Process
Manufacturers load raw plastic materials onto a hopper. The conveyance channel uses a long screw to push the raw material from the hopper into the turning screw. The friction from the turning screw and heat melts the plastic into a liquid state before it reaches the end of the channel. The melted material is then shaped using a metal die. It forces the molten plastic into hole that is shaped for the size and shape of the tube needed (round tubing or square tubing). The plastic cools into desired lengths of plastic tubing. Manufacturers then cut the tubing to the length that is needed for the application.
